Growing up my dad used to always make us falafels that we would eat in a pita with a mix of veggies like kidney beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, bean sprouts, avocado, plus a cucumber yogurt sauce. It was a build your own kind, which is one of my favorite things to do. I always loved this meal!
Luckily, there is a locally owned Greek restaurant near my house that serves a falafel sandwich where I can get my fix. This dish is a large pita topped with falafels, lettuce, tomato, onion and yogurt sauce. It is also served with a side of french fries.
There is one problem with this dish compared to my dads. They don’t open the pita and stuff it full. This makes it very difficult to eat. As I was enjoying this dish with my mother-in-law, I was noticing that I was getting more yogurt sauce on my face and embarrassingly up my nose than in my mouth. There is one thing to have a bit of your meal on your lip or chin, but up your nose is very unladylike. Also, cucumber yogurt is not a smell you want to be stuck with for a few hours. I finally gave up, threw in the towel, and got out the fork. I turned my yogurt attacking sandwich into a converted salad.
This dish is not as good as my dads, but still yummy. Next time I will just skip trying to eat it like giant taco and just order the salad.
